As Superintendent of the Provost School Division, I served as CEO (Chief Executive Officer) of a school district teaching 750 students, 100 employees, and an annual budget of $6,000,000. Answering to a Board of Trustees of 5 elected representatives of the public, my job was to obtain and allocate resources and to evaluate and reward results. My best work was accomplished when I could involve students, staff, and community members. Given the opportunity, people will do their best for themselves and for each other. Two highlights stand out. Recognition as one of the top 10 School Superintendents in Alberta for a University of Alberta doctoral study was definitely motivating. This study became the basis for my own doctoral study on Effective School Superintendents, my second highlight. I learned a great deal about good leadership and good people in studying and researching this topic. I enjoyed being a school superintendent and learned to live with the stress of trying to be everything for everyone all the time. (Apparently, I enjoy being less stressed as well.)
